Not part of the story I was writing, but just something I jotted down real quick. I might expand upon it, but I don't know where I would take this. Still, it's been awhile since I updated and I figured I might as well throw something down.
Zeke zipped up his jacket tighter and took a long drag on his lit cigarette. It was a rare occurrence, but sometimes he just felt that need to chew on something. The butt of a cigarette worked wonders for that and the warm smoke filling his lungs, as acrid as it was, was almost soothing for such a cool night.
He smoked maybe a pack, two at the most in a year, so he made sure to cherish each inhale as sickening as it was. Every time it he exhaled, he let the taste build up in his mouth to remind him why it was such a rare thing. It tasted terrible, but it was like a treat. He opened his mouth and let the smoke leave his lungs and watch it float up and away in the cool autumn air.
The smoke left a hazy trail up into the immediate sky above him, only faintly blocking the stars, or at least the ones he could see. It annoyed him only being able to see a fraction of the cosmos. Zeke always wanted to see more of it for himself, but was only left to what he could find online when he had the time. Still, he took the time to appreciate what he could observe.
Another inhale of smoke. He held it inside him, letting the warmth expand. The feeling made his fingers tingle a bit. He just wished that smoking wasn’t so unhealthy. If it wasn’t for how much it kills the body, he’d gladly pay the six dollars to keep the habit.
But it is how it is and there’s no point in thinking about what ifs…Zeke thought to himself. Just so long as he made this count.
VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVTTTTTTTT!!!!!!
VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!
The next exhale was more of a sigh at his phone’s vibration. He got a text and flipped it open.
From: Hayley Time: 12:54 A.M.
Hey ba-
Zeke flipped it back closed, “whatever…”, he said before stuffing it into his jacket pocket. At that point in time, he didn’t give a shit what it said. He just really longed to be alone, at least for a little bit.
He reconsidered a bit. He flipped the phone back open and turned it off. He usually kept it on during a late night stroll such as this. He didn’t want to be mugged or hurt and not able to call for help, but decided this time, he didn’t even care.
Zeke, though usually indifferent to much of life’s troubles, now he found he was growing quite apathetic to his own life in general. He shrugged to himself deciding that if he were to die on this walk, that night then and there, it wouldn’t matter if he had a phone or not. It was just giving him a false sense of security.
He put up his hood and took another long drag on his death stick. Zeke probably looked more threatening to anyone else that should happen to be walking by at that time anyway. Only twice did he ever meet anyone on his walks. One of them was a homeless man who asked for some spare change. He gave him twenty dollars.
The second was a man who said nothing. Maybe he was just like Zeke, just wanted to spend some time to himself. Maybe he was just walking home. Maybe he was homeless as well. Zeke didn’t stop him to ask and the man didn’t stop to tell his life’s story.
His cigarette was just about out, so he took once last hurrah of an inhale and flicked the butt away. Holding that last bit of smoke inside of him, he let it spread throughout his body until he was finally content and opened his mouth. The smoked rolled out and like each path of smoke before it spiraled up into the sky above.
As the last of the smoke finally rolled off his tongue, he decided to satisfy another one of his sense. He took out his iPod and placed the buds in his ears and tuned it to his “Relxa” play list. When he first typed it, the typo was an accident, but decided against changing. It seemed more natural that way, the way he originally typed it, and kept it there.
Zeke scrolled down to a song called ‘Breezy’ and let it soothe and wash over him. It was hardly even a song. It was the sound of waves washing up on a shore with a Spanish Guitar playing a slow, happy melody. It was more relaxing than the cigarette.
A coincidental breeze swept over him and gave him the chills. Zeke looked up at the moon and decided
maybe it was time to finally head back. Putting his cold hands in his pockets, and turn his iPod up, he turned on his heel and started his trek back.
Zeke arrived at his doorstep finding himself unable to put his hand on the knob for a moment. He hesitated, but pushed through and walked in.
“Darling!”, he was instantly greeted by his girlfriend, May.
She jumped off the couch and leaped onto him. She latched her arms around Zeke and he embraced her warmth. It was soothing to have a warm body to hold and he loved how soft she was. May pushed him back for a moment and punched him square in the chest.
“You dick! Can’t you at least let me know when you’re going on a walk this late?”, then she hugged him again.
Zeke didn’t answer, but he held her tighter. If it was one thing he liked about her, it was her passion.
“Sorry, I just kinda decided to go last moment”, he grinned and ruffled her hair, “now can you let go so I can at least take off my coat?”
She stuck out her tongue and let go, “Why the hell do you feel the need to worry me and go out on a stroll anyway?”
“Well, I just need to clear my head sometimes”, it was an honest answer; for the most part.
May looked up into his eyes. There was something there that was troubling him, but as per usual, he tried to hide it. She bit her lip and put her hands on her hips. She gave him an accusing glance, but he just shrugged and grinned again. May sighed. If he didn’t want to talk about it, she wasn’t going to force him.
Zeke walked over and put his hand softly on her cheek, “don’t worry. If there was something big going on, I’d tell you.”
May rolled her eyes to which Zeke responded by kissing her. He loved her soft lips and as much as she loved his, she still pushed him away.
“Hey, Ass Hat, don’t forget, you’re still in trouble for making me worry.”
“I love it when you pout like th-”
“Don’t you try to sweet talk your way out of it. Something is bugging you and you’re not telling me something”, she hated being out on something. It was an old habit of his she’s tried to break for years, but could barely even bend it.
Zeke put his hands behind his head and just looked at her bright amber eyes. They were dazzling really. He knew that as long as he stared into them long enough, she’d melt and buckle. Resist as she might, he knew that she just loved him too much. Whenever he thought about it, the power he truly had over her, he got an odd twist in his stomach.
“Listen…”, already, the cracks were starting to form, “you know I love you right?”
He snickered, “Babe, I’ve known that since forever.”
May punched him in the stomach, that was a new one, “then why do you insist on always making me worry?”

Chapter 5 Part 4
Cylvia ground her teeth as Auvyr twisted her arm farther and farther. She made no sign of giving in or even any of pain. It was slowly broken, bones popping, she could feel them, but didn’t so much as flinch. Auvyr was put on edge. There was no point in killing someone who wasn’t afraid. There was no point in killing someone if there were no screams or any pain.
“Scream. Scream you bitch. Fucking. Scream”, he was fed up with it. All he wanted was one good, earsplitting scream.
Cylvia held her ground. She refused to show any kind of weakness. He started to twist the bone at an angle. She felt the bone start to pierce through her arm from the inside. It was a sickening feeling, and it was an almost blinding pain, but she kept a straight face.
“Listen here”, he flipped her onto her back, “If you don’t scream, I will cut your throat out here and now”, he brandished his sword and held it up to her neck.
Cylvia spit in his face and grabbed his arm and pushed it up towards him. He easily anticipated the sword, but didn’t expect the kick in the crotch. Even for someone like him, that easily crumpled his game plan.
Even a demon like him wouldn’t be able to withstand that without at least faltering, Cylvia thought. She picked up her sword. She had only one usable arm, her left, but she was fortunate enough to be ambidextrous when it came to the blade.
Auvyr bitterly snickered, “Good, it seems like you still got some fight in you. It‘d be a terrible pity to kill a helpless little girly.”, he grabbed his crotch with one hand and grabbed his sword with the other.
“Alright bitch, you ready to get in the fucking ground”, he screamed.
Auvry charged, sword at his side. Cylvia kept her eyes sharp and prepared for an attack. She anticipated a possible sweep followed be a kick. Maybe even an overhead slash with a punch afterwards. She admired his ability to chain swordsmanship and martial arts together so fluidly. It was going to be hard, but she couldn’t fail. She never failed before, she wouldn’t start today.
Cylvia wouldn’t have to do anything, at least not at that moment. Auvyr was blindsided and tackled by Adva. Auvyr kicked the body off of him, but not fast or far enough. Auvyr was too far into Adva’s range and Adva was too close to adequately make use of the swords.
Adva knew with his surprise attack he would have a few moments to get in a few punches before Auvyr would have a chance to reclaim his senses and counter. A right hook into the jaw, left jab into the collar bone, right upper into the ribs. Adva just kept on throwing as many punches as he could.
Then, even in a flurry of punches, Adva could see that Auvyr was starting to smile.
“Cylvia, get the hell outta here! You can’t hope to win, just go!”, he barked. It was the most serious he had ever been on a mission, it shocked her that he even had a serious side.
Cylvia took the hint. She sheathed the sword she had in her hand and picked up her other and walked away. There was no point for her to try and help. She bitterly swallowed her defeat by a superior and left him in Adva’s hands.
Auvyr dropped his blade and started his counter assault. He ducked another shot to the face and punched his sternum and followed with a shot to the solar plexus. Adva gasped and dropped to his knee, but he quickly recovered by throwing a punch into Auvyr’s stomach.
It connected, but Auvyr easily absorbed and caught the blow. In a quick flow, he was able to kick Adva onto his back and arm bar him. Adva didn’t panic, but knew he had to think quick or he was going to have his arm snapped in half. He tried snaking his arm out of his grip, but it was too strong. He tried to roll over, but Auvyr’s legs had him pinned down. The only thing he could do is flex his arm and prolong it unless he could think of something else in the next thirty seconds.
Nearing the entrance of the Katacombs, Jack and Skylar were getting closer to escaping. Skylar had much longer legs and was a few paces ahead of her smaller bodied partner, but he was still keeping an even pace behind her.
“C’mon Jack, we’re almost there. If anything else, we can at least get the hell outta here”
As they approached the spiral staircase, another figure slowly stepped down. Although there was no way Jack could’ve known who that was, Skylar had heard of a girl fitting the description of the girl walking towards them now. A monster, a murderous monster. Without weapons, they would have no way of even touching her.
“Jack, quick, dodge”, at her words, they both leaped to the side.
“Gotcha”, Aqua was at the foot of the stairs, ready to meet the blonde. She raised Thanatos and Mors and hastily fired off a few rounds.
“Oh c’mon, won’t you come out and play? I love those icy blue eyes of yours blondie”
Skylar swore to herself. She was the target, and if what she heard was correct, this girl never gave up on a prize until they were dead. Seeing that killer was still alive, Skylar didn’t think anyone had ever bested her either. She didn’t even seem to acknowledge Jack however. Sksylar took that into account in hopes that she might be able to use that fact.
She looked over at the body of Max, the man now dead and the weapons at his sides. If only she had the foresight to pick them up. Jack was shaken from being shot at, but he was at least on his feet. He stood with his gun gripped tightly in both of hands and held close to his chest. Jack was breathing hard, but his eyes seemed determined. He was quickly adapting, Skylar just hoped he wouldn’t do anything stupid.
He did.
Jack reached around the corner and fired off a few blind shots. Aqua was so focused on her right, that she almost was hit by the shots coming from Jack, but she caught the sight out of her peripherals and was able to duck out of the way. She smiled out of amusement and fired her guns right back and hit him in the arm.
“THE FUCK!”, Jack screamed. He dropped his weapon and instantly fell back. The ripping pain of the bullet penetrating his flesh, was more painful than he thought. He looked at the wound and thankfully it grazed the top, but it was still bleeding.
Jack reached into his pocket and pulled out a small bottle of peroxide and dumped it on the wound. He usually savored watching the foaming of the liquid, but he couldn’t take the time. He took out a length of bandage and wrapped it around the wound, tying it securely.
“Took too much time fucker”, Aqua smiled a wicked grin and cocked her gun behind Jack’s head.
“You’re missing someone”, Skylar said from the other side. Aqua quickly turned ready to fire. She knew the Blonde couldn’t have been far away and she’d protect her comrade. Regardless it was a stupid move, she figured the chances of the blond having a weapon for herself was slim lest she would have fired in unison with the boy. Calculating everything out, Aqua figured she was in the clear and she would have the blond to herself soon.
What she didn’t expect was a wall of dirt flung into her face. Skylar threw the biggest handful of sand she could into her assailants face and ducked. Aqua grunted in annoyance, but couldn’t get much out. Sand went into her nose and a bit into her mouth, but her eyes are what disrupted her.
She shot in random directions hoping to hit, but she heard them all hit stone. Skylar snuck by and took Jack by his good arm and hid behind a pillar with him. She held him close to make sure neither of them stood out. His heart was pounding hard against his chest; she could both feel and hear it.
“Pretty cheap fuckin’ trick blondie”, Aqua’s spit into the ground, but just couldn’t help smiling like a fool, “but that’s why I figured you’d be such an interesting mark.”
She finished wiping most of the dirt out of her eyes. Aqua’s eyes still stung, but nothing she couldn’t take to get that ultimate high. She raised her guns and pricked her ears up like a cat trying to pick up any kind of noise. It was unnecessary however. They left foot prints. She'd have no difficulty stalking them.

Chapter 5 Part 3
They were starting to get into a panic. She slid the next bullet into the chamber and took aim to another armored squad man. Until he ducked behind another car. They were all well guarded behind cars. After 4 deaths, they were able to tell the direction of the shooter. It appeared she was going to have to change tactics a bit.
She carefully crawled forward through the brush, she was vastly outnumbered, which is what she adored. Aqua loved winning and the more overwhelming the odds, the better. Unfortunately for them, she was low enough to the ground to be able to aim underneath the cars. She aimed carefully underneath one of the armored trucks, wanting to hit the similarly protected officers behind it.
Aqua pulled the trigger and saw the blood splatter out from the foot she had hit. The man instantly went down to the ground while the other bodies scattered. Aqua quickly slammed another bullet into the chamber and shot the body. The bullet screamed through the air and went into his body and almost traversed through the body from navel to neck.
As his wounds nearly burst with gore and vermillion liquid, Aqua’s body felt like pure electricity. Her fingers were shook and the back of her head was tingled from euphoria, but she couldn’t celebrate yet, she had more bodies to take care of.
Aqua ejected the magazine from her gun and quickly loaded in a new one. She ejected the bullet casing and slid in a fresh one all without taking her eyes off of her targets. She got up to her knees and started to retreat a bit. Although there was a bit of a problem having to shoot through the brush, they would have a lower chance of discovering her.
Aqua continued to move, gracefully moving through the woods. Leaping over roots, tiptoeing around brambles, swerving by tree trunks, she made very little noise. In their hysteria and yelling, trying to establish some kind of order to oust her out, there was no way they were going to be able to hear her.
Aqua found a suitable tree to hoist herself and her gun into and took residence in its canopy with little effort. She took her empty magazine and threw it as hard as she could from the direction she came from and watched them scramble and aim over in that direction. It almost made her laugh at how much of a joke she took them for.
She aimed through her optics once more, recalibrated her sights to take into account her new position and felt fortunate enough that she had a clear shot through the leaves. As they all converged towards one direction, she took careful aim and fired hitting a man in the lung. Blood had found its way out of his mouth, leaping in large quantity from his body and spraying out of his wound.
The other officers took a moment to register what had happened right in front of them. Looks of shock appeared on their faces; he must’ve been somebody important. She had to bite into her tongue, not for the taste of blood this time, but to choke back her fits of laughter that would otherwise burst forward. They had no idea how much fun she was having.
Another bullet case ejected, another bullet slid in and she was ready for another shot.
Time passed slowly for them as one by one she artfully executed another member, another one of their dear friends, ripped apart by a screaming bullet. They stood no chance and cut their losses retreating. Maybe they assumed they were outnumbered. If only they knew that one lone woman had out foxed them.
When the last car had pulled out, she crept out from her hiding place and into the open. Eleven bodies in total. Eleven lifeless corpses oozing a river of gore. Aqua knelt next to one of the bodies, still fresh and warm, and ran her finger along his blood soaked shirt and raised it to her mouth. She suckled on her finger her liquid prize and savored the flavor of it. Still, it wasn’t enough.
A twitch of movement caught her attention from the side of her eye. One of the officers was still clutching onto life and was going for his side arm. His arm violently shook as his bloodied limb desperately went for his last resort. Aqua stepped towards him and her lips grew from ear to ear as the fear in his eyes saturated his gaze the closer she got.
His hand reached his gun and slowly pulled the firearm from its holster even though he knew he stood no chance. Taking aim, the officer concentrated his whole will into pulling the trigger but was too weak and too slow. Aqua kicked the gun out of his hand and cackled into the air.
"You cling onto life so hard, that's rather admirable", she held his head up in both hands and took off his helmet and stared deep into his eyes. Her eyes projecting her ravenous appetite briefly met by a trembling despair.
"You must taste delicious", Aqua bit down into the side of his neck and sucked the final bits of life from his body and felt his body go limp, though it wasn't enough to satiate her.
She had to have the blonde. There was no other substitute. She left her rifle outside and drew her two matching Baretta 92F’s dubbed Thanatos and Mors and descended down the spiral stone staircase.

Chapter 5 Part 2
Aqua was starting to feel antsy. She sat outside in a tree, covered by thick foliage and cloak that blended in with her environment quite well. She always assumed Egypt was just pure desert, so she was quite happy that although the air was hot, she wasn’t laying on top of burning sand and was in the shade.
She mounted her DSR-1 Rifle on the limb, attached the scope and screwed on the suppressor. She accounted for all various conditions, but there was very little that would disrupt the shot should she need to make any.
Aqua had confidence in her team, though she hoped they would fail. She wanted them to fail so she could pick off every single one of them. Especially the blonde bomber. She took an especially keen interest in her and it made her heart pound just thinking about blasting her.
Aqua bit into her lips hard enough to draw more blood and lavishly licked her lips clean. She was so excited, so passionate about being able to control the lives that were in front of her. It was a high that she couldn’t get from any drink, inhalant or drug. The stimulation from eliminating a life was a craving unlike any other.
Aqua while impatient, was at least disciplined. She could stay in that one position for however many hours that she needed so long as there was a promise to kill somebody. She got into prone position and locked her body into place, staring at the entrance.
Soon, someone ran out, but it wasn’t one of her targets. Then another. And another. Humans were running out of the building; someone must’ve slipped up and been discovered. Her eyes took caution to observe everyone with harsher scrutiny. She refused to let any target leave alive.
Aqua quickly scanned every face, body, head, article of clothing on every person walking out. So far, none of what she was looking for had passed. Her finger twitched on the trigger, beads of sweat started to amass and run down her face. She longed to kill one, just one of them. Like an appetizer.
Aqua just continued to breathe. Breathing helped her suppress her appetite and stop herself from shooting just out of habit. If she held her breath, her reflexes would instantly take over and she’d shoot the first thing that moved.
Breathe…Breathe…if you shoot an innocent you won’t be on any missions for a long time… don’t kill anyone but the targets…
Everyone who appeared to be inside had quickly dissipated, to Aqua’s bittersweet disappointment and relief. She was looking for an excuse, any excuse, to shoot somebody. Sirens wailed out in the distance and were quickly approaching, and her wicked smile stretched over her teeth as she might have gotten her reason.
Squad cars and two armored trucks rolled up. After the riots that took place in Egypt almost a decade ago, they really picked up their slack. They refused to let something like a terrorist event from taking place in their country.
Well…if they go inside and find my team, they’ll probably shoot on sight...Right? I can’t let that one happen, the mission would obviously fail... That means these guys have to die. I have to kill them. There's no other way. Their lives are mine!
She held her eye to the scope and eagerly held onto her gun. They all got out of their cars and held their weapons from behind their doors pointed towards the entrance. Two teams of eight each got out of the reinforced cars armed quite well with automatic weapons in their hands, a side arm, and a shot gun slung across their backs. Those guys were ready to fight. They just made one mistake.
They failed to anticipate the monster creeping behind them.
She took quick aim with her gun and held her breath and got in the right mindset. She needed to take out the armored units first. She got a head in her sights and fired. She loved the feeling of recoil being slammed back into her shoulder. It passed through his skull and went into the skull of the person standing adjacent.
Two humans, one bullet. They instantly scattered. They frantically looked around and tried to take cover, but they couldn’t hide from her. She had every one of them in sight.
Aqua pulled back the lever, cocked it and slid it back into position. It was smooth going back into place and she prepped for another shot. She took a moment to savor her first two kills. She gazed at the blood seeping from their heads. Was giddy about the way her other potential victims panicked.
Aqua fired another round and watched her next victim violently jerk as the bullet penetrated their brain and they crumpled down. Her smile stretched so far, her lips cracked open again and started to bleed, but she loved the irony taste of her own blood.
Aqua silently crept down the tree she was in. If she fired off too many shots from the same place, they may just throw a grenade over her direction in an attempt to shoo her out. She had to keep the upper hand.
She moved making sure to not disrupt anything as best as she could. Her cloak and the shadows were enough to keep her visual presence unknown, but if they heard her, it could all be over. She knelt down and aimed clearly through the bushes. She had a clear shot at someone cowering in a squad car.
Aqua fired, but felt no satisfaction. Cowards served as no joy. They were in a state of mind where they accepted defeat and death. It was like they were willingly turning their lives over their own grim reaper. She spit the blood out of her mouth, that kill soured the taste.

Chapter 5
I am deeply apologetic about the large delay in writing. I went to write this many, many times, but every time I did the draft felt wrong. I have written and rewritten this part at least six times sometimes getting five pages (on Microsoft Word) long before feeling it was quite artificial and scrapping the entire thing. I feel most comfortable releasing this, but I am still nervous. I am always open to feedback and am always thankful for it.
Thank you for your support and I'll continue to support my followers in all their endeavors! Also, I keep up on my other blog quite well if you haven't checked out that yet. It's just a compilation of funny events in my life. Much easier to write about non-fiction than it is to create something sometimes.
Everyone remained still. It almost felt that time itself stayed still to keep the monster inside Xephyr from appearing. He clutched at the wound in his chest, feeling the blood lightly flow. Although the wound appeared to be shallow, it was just the catalyst necessary for Xephyr to change.
He had lost control of his hand, another entity moved his body for him. His hand wiped across the wound and moved up to his lips. His tongue flickered out involuntarily and slid up the palm. A questionable look came from both Max and Cylvia, but Adva started to sweat. He knew what was settling in.
Mmm…your blood tastes exquisite…
Please, stop Auvyr. Get back inside me! I don’t want you fighting my battles for me!
I wonder…what would her blood taste like…, the voice inside his head, dubbed Auvyr, completely disregarded what Xephyr said. Auvyr was now in control. He was going to relish his time out.
“MAX! CYLVIA! Get the hell outta here now!”, Adva barked. They needed to get out of there. If he drew any weapons, they would all be murdered in moments.
Auvyr licked his lips. His bloodlust was unquenchable, but it could be fed. He slowly drew his swords and focused on Max. As mentally unstable as he was, there was still a high manner of intelligence creeping around in that skull. Auvyr observed the firearms Max had and knew that he posed an immediate threat compared to the swordswoman.
His eyes and his muscles tightened, ready to leap at his new enemy. Cylvia saw this quite obvious sign and stood between the two.
“Get out of the way woman.”, she did not respond with anything more than a dark look of defiance. He clicked his tongue and tilted his head hoping she’d move. Her eyes narrowed to match his own. It took very little for him to garner a hatred for it, and she was quickly becoming something he utterly abhorred. Just the mere sight of her face, her sharpened eyes, expressionless but calculating, was enough to drive him mad.
"If you're so eager to die, you can be next", he licked his lips lavishly. She stood her ground.
“Fine. If anything this just means I can taste your flesh and blood ahead of schedule."
Auvyr lurched forward with his two swords thrusting one towards her chest which she expertly deflected, but used the momentum from her reflection to propel a sweep down by her legs. She managed to jump over it, but barely. He continued a spin but sliced vertically downward.
Cylvia foresaw such an obvious movement and sidestepped ready to exploit the opening he had just made. She swung horizontally expecting to quickly end him. Unknown to her, he wanted her to do that. He planned for it. He knew she would instantly recognize the obvious opening he made and was going to exploit that. He dropped down on all four and as soon as the sword passed over his head, he tackled her to the ground.
Auvyr tangled his arms in hers and had her in a painful shoulder lock. Although it hurt, she did not scream or even show the slightest hint of pain. Auvyr prided himself on being an extreme sadist; not seeing her show any signs of pain furthered his anger. He pushed farther and farther until he felt her arm pop out of its socket, but even though her muscles tightened up, she still made no expression of pain.
He looked at her with frightening contempt. She stared back, but made no signs of intimidation. Auvyr spat on her, he was done with her for now. He now had a bigger target to take care of. He looked over to his other enemy, but he was no longer there.
Max had moved to a different location. He couldn’t find a better shot against his enemy. With how close he got to Cylvia and how quick both of them fought, he couldn’t afford to miss, cripple Cylvia, and be the reason she gets killed. Max moved about, trying to find a better viewpoint, but every time he thought he had a proper shot, Cylvia would move right back into the way.
Then Cylvia made her mistake. She got knocked down and this monster of blinding speed had her in his control. Max cocked his gun as this beast twisted her arm further and further. He aimed, determined to get him directly in that tormenting smirk. Until a heavy punch to his jaw connected.
Max, though confused, instantly recovered and pointed his gun in the direction of his assailant. His gun was instantly smacked aside as another jab came straight for his face. He dodged, grabbed the arm, and threw whoever it was over his back. A woman flipped over him, but was able to twist her body to stop herself from falling down.
She reversed the grip between the two and instead pulled him down. She rocked onto her back and flung him backwards. If anything, he was just as acrobatic as she and was quickly able to regain his balance.
“That’s it, I’m tired of this shit”, Max said, taking a few large strides backwards and brandishing his gun once more.
Bang!
Max went down and crumpled into a heap. His head now had two more holes in it and blood was starting to seep into the sand. Beside the body, a terror stricken Jack stood, quivering, gun in hand.
Jack had no idea what to think. His mind was blank of any tangible thought, but his emotions ran rampant. He felt disgusted, confused, angry, terrified but above all, and almost paradoxically, empty. He hadn’t taken a life before even though he had been in many battles. His role was always as medic and support. He never knew what it would be like to kill someone, but he didn’t think it’d be like this.
He doubled over and threw up on the body he had just murdered unable to contain himself. His body started to feel cold as the shock started to creep and swirl through his veins. Jack felt as cold as space; might as well have been space for the emptiness he felt lingering.
Jack felt dizzy, his consciousness was quickly spiraling out of control. He tried to destabilize himself, but felt his mind slip away. He was close to falling into his own vile mess of regurgitation and blood, but was caught by Skylar.
“Hey, c’mon now. I need you. You did well”, she looked beyond her troubles with personal contact and held him close, “don’t you dare fall just from that. Nobody here will carry your ass outta here. You need. To get up. NOW.”
The words rang in Jack’s ears. He remembered that he had to be stronger and abandon his weak self. A warmth started to rise within him as fragility gave way to a stubbornness to continue fighting.
“Good, good, now get up, Jack!”, Skylar helped him to his feet and slung her backpack over her
shoulders.
“Wait, I have to ask”, Skylar looked at him, her eyes still as crisp and cool as usual, but the bitterness was not as biting.
“Is…that how you feel every time you kill somebody?”, he glanced back at the lifeless body.
Skylar hadn’t thought about it, but was unsure on how she wanted to answer. His eyes were searching, but she her patience was quickly wearing thin.
“It’ll get easier with time”, is all she said.
